Art Lighting Specialists @ Friends of the Scholar’ Art Exhibition
Munbangsau: Friends of the Scholar’ an exhibition of Korean Crafts which is the 9th exhibition we have assisted the Korean Cultural Centre UK with here in London.
The exhibition is based on munbangsau – the four essential literary tools used by Confucian scholars (seonbi) during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897 AD). The exhibition reflects upon the spirit of the seonbi tradition in Korea.
The overall exhibition space was divided up into various sections. This was achieved with the use of temporary walls made from handmade paper and metal box sections.
These walls had a translucent quality which gave them their own quality of light, life and effect to the artworks. They also had a very different feel to the normal white gallery walls you find in most exhibitions.
Our leading art lighting specialists used a warm temperature of light (2700K), produced from museum-quality LED lamps (CRI 95) that give atmosphere to the many features. For example; artworks of the recreated seonbi’s room which has a plethora of different handcrafted objects which needed to be sympathetically lighted.
Fortunately, this exhibition could make use of the earlier upgrades to the lighting track and light fixtures which our expert lighting designers had implemented.
This vastly improved lighting equipment in the hands of our art lighting specialists meant light fixtures could be placed with pin point accuracy coupled to the appropriate lighting filters to achieve an aesthetic balance to the exhibition.
Each area had different demands for layout and lighting to keep the visitor's attention whilst moving through the individual spaces.
Visitors were given the chance to use a set of scholar brushes and ink to spell their names on handmade paper, in a low tech interactive display.
The exhibition opening was accompanied by a performance from a classical Geomungo player.
The Geomungo is a traditional Korean stringed musical instrument that provided a real authentic feel to a wonderful evening that was enjoyed by VIP’s and guests from the art world.
The exhibition was Co-presented by the Korean Cultural Centre UK and the Cheongju Craft Biennale Organisation as part of the Korea/UK season.
