Lighting Art Perfectly for Exhibitions & Galleries
"Round And Around" Exhibition
Korean Cultural Centre UK & Korean Film Archive exhibited the Round and Around exhibition for the first time outside Korea. From a cinematic release to a comprehensive exhibition, this amazing project was expanded. The exhibition now includes video, sound, and art installations, taking visitors on a trip through Korea's contemporary history.
Our lighting designers were tasked with lighting art perfectly in all four locations around the exhibitions galleries.
The lighting for 64 transparent hanging art banners (as seen in the photographs), was a difficult task to accomplish. These banners have an almost holographic or 3D quality when viewed from various vantage points.
Our lighting specialists used multiple track spotlights fitted with LED lamps to project light from different angles. These light fittings were placed both behind and in front of the art banners at exact points to accentuate the 3D impact. By using a 70/30 split in light level differential from back to front improved the 3-dimensional visualisation and made the banners almost magical in appearance.
It was critical to generate this consistency across the entire display. To achieve this, an LED light meter was used to read and then adjust our light levels to both the reverse and front surfaces.
When LED lighting is used, it is critical to utilise a specialised LED light meter (which has been accurately calibrated) to precisely determine lux levels. If your artwork or object is light sensitive then this is critical. Standard light meters are incapable of precisely measuring LED light. As a result, your artwork or object may be exposed to far more hazardous light than your light meter indicates.
After looking at various options the curator decided on cool white 5000K (kelvin) LED lamps. Anti-dazzle filters were also placed in front of the LED lamps to reduce glare, making the display more eye-friendly.
The curator wanted visitors to get a 3D impression from the artwork even though they were only flat printed graphics. The effect should almost appear as if you could look out the printed windows into the gardens beyond. To achieve this we used 10 degree LED lamps positioned and angled onto the printed window surfaces to give the impression of light coming in through the windows.
The effect was exceptional; lighting art perfectly!
For the entrance and other walls, wall washers provided an even spread of light and a contemporary freshness to the exhibition title and vinyl text. Then the use of fill-in lighting around the gallery space provided a safe and cohesiveness environment for everyone to enjoy.
